But here, you are certain to enjoy a stateroom that is over twice that size. American Cruise Lines says that the average age for all of its passengers is low 60s. But that's not what we observed on our Lower Mississippi River cruise. On that sailing, the average age was easily 75, with many passengers older than that.
Ship Overview
For us, the combination of plain fun, a really wonderful, engaging staff, the educational excursions, and just seeing a part of the country that was completely new to us, made this a memorable experience. We ended our trip with a New Orleans stay, which really added to all of the above. Since our interest in and knowledge of the Civil War is pretty intense, we would have liked more directly civil war battle talks and excursions, or better information on how to build our own excursions on the fly. The guides at the two Civil War battlefields we visited were beyond excellent. The room was great, quiet, private, with our own lttle balcony. You only pack or unpack at the very beginning of the week or at the very end.
If you want to do Riverboat Cruising…
You almost made 5star (and I still think 4 star is a great rating) but in comparison to other river cruises such as Viking or Scenic you’re not quite at that level. However I also need to consider price and I would say that in comparison you do provide great value per dollar.. The publication evaluated 17 cruise lines through a combination of expert evaluations (30%), traveler reviews (50%) and health ratings published by the U.S.

Only one complaint, having to wait sometimes for quite awhile for food in the dining room. Our guests are encouraged to share their personal story and write a review after their cruise. If this ship was doing back-to-back itineraries, I would have begged and pleaded to stay aboard. We found the cuisine aboard the American Eagle to be very good. In fact, every guest that we dined with aboard the ship agreed.
This was my first river cruise
Seating is open, so you can choose to sit with your own party or join other guests to make new friends. Alternatively, for breakfast, you can order in-room dining. All ships are built in Maryland, and ACL is proud of its status as the only U.S. built, owned, and operated cruise line. In addition to the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, itineraries are available on the Columbia and Snake Rivers and in Alaska, Washington state, the Southeast, and New England.
American Harmony Review
American Harmony's uppermost deck features open-air seating and plenty of viewing space for those who want to take in the sights and sounds of the Columbia and Snake rivers. With a clean and uncluttered layout reminiscent of a modern European river cruise ship, plenty of space is offered for guests looking to relax and enjoy a day of scenic cruising. That's partly because the company has an all-American crew, with college kids making up the steward and deckhand staff. The line also doesn't nickel-and-dime with additional charges -- there's no casino, specialty restaurants or bar onboard, and the line includes a shore excursion in every port.
This experience was perfection

Special menus are available to passengers on restricted diets. Every evening before dinner, a complimentary cocktail hour is hosted with a bar setup and hors d’oeuvres. Dinner is served with complimentary wine and beer. With no more than 100 passengers on board, the small ship allows passengers to experience each port of call up close and personal.

A modern-style couch and coffee table round out the living room area, along with a second large-screen TV, refrigerator, and a small dining table with two chairs. There’s plenty of closet space in both rooms, a double vanity in the bathroom and two private balconies with floor-to-ceiling sliders. The Veranda suites have a joint sleeping and living area with one TV and extra seating, including several chairs, and desk space.
If you want to do Riverboat Cruising right, you have to use American Cruise Lines. We thought this would be a once in a lifetime experience. Always, kind, helpful and some even inspiring (server Genie, on Serenade). Our server, Kristy, always went above and beyond to try and make our dining experience a good one. They always tried to accommodate us but it shouldn't have been that painful.

I can't rave about the food enough, I loved the 1/2 portions, and no wait to be seated. Tours were fantastic, extremely well put todather. Our cabin was spotless everyday, even a turndown. Entertainment was top notch, a lot of thoughtful effort went into planning.

Republicans were thrown in with Democrats, liberals with conservatives, and through the magic of Cocktail Hour lubrication, open seating, and inquisitive minds, everyone spoke to each other. Everyone seemed interested in each other’s stories, and, over the course of the week, I witnessed friendships forming before my very eyes. Though marketed to retired professionals “age 62 and up,” American Cruise Line passengers skew older with a spattering of younger whippersnappers. Interestingly, a good number on the Chesapeake Bay cruise were retired teachers. During the evening’s entertainment or lecture, the crew passes around baskets of popcorn, ice-cream sundaes, and root beer floats.
American is the only cruise line in the world with a fleet of 100% U.S. built & flagged riverboats and small cruise ships. I was pleasantly surprised by the whole experience. All the people working on the cruise were helpful and wonderful to interact with. It was a great experience and I would highly recommend it for anyone interested in local history and sites to visit and is looking for a relaxed atmosphere in which to do so. Cruising offers something for every traveler, allowing you to visit multiple destinations while sleeping in the same bed every night. Whether your next vacation is with your family, your partner or solo, there's a ship that’s right for you.
Although a river sailing on American Cruise Lines costs as much as a luxury line at sea, you won't see the same designer duds onboard. We saw very few brand names on our cruise, and little bling. Daytime wear is comfortable for tours, with collared shirts and shorts for men, and capris and T-shirts for women.
The Main Lounge is located all the way forward overlooking the ship's bow, while a secondary lounge (known as the Sky Lounge) is situated one deck up, all the way at the rear of the ship. There is also an outdoor cafe where you can dine casually outside while enjoying riverside views. The ship measures 241feet and carries 109 passengers at full occupancy with 50 crew. In 2024 it will offer the seven-night Cape Codder itinerary, round-trip from Boston. American Cruise Line features an assortment of itineraries on waterways all over the USA. “Theme” Cruises, like the Mark Twain Tribute Cruise on the Mississippi, New England Lobster Fest Cruise, Columbia River Wine Cruise and Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise tend to book up at least a year in advance.
Dining options include a variety of restaurants serving French cuisine, Pan-Asian dishes, Italian specialties, steak and more. Travelers can choose departure ports from the Americas, the Mediterranean, Asia, Scandinavia, Northern Europe and more. Viking operates smaller ships with a maximum of 930 passengers, which makes it easier to visit ports that larger cruise liners cannot navigate. Engaged, friendly, and fun to be around while they were doing an excellent job at whatevr their job was--table serving, cabin cleaning, deckhands, everything. American Harmony has two comfortable lounges where lectures, presentations and onboard entertainment are delivered daily. Particularly noteworthy are the two Grand Suites that measure 900 square feet apiece and include balconies that wrap around the stern of the ship, offering 270-degree views of the Mississippi River.
American Harmony doesn't cater to families with children specifically, and no special areas for kids or teenagers are available onboard. A handful of children might be seen on summer or holiday sailings but, by-and-large, this is a cruise experience geared towards mature adults. The second vessel in American Cruise Line's "modern riverboat" series, American Harmony eschews the Mark Twain-esque aspects that have traditionally characterized Mississippi River cruises. Gone are the paddlewheel propulsion and the traditional Victorian-era riverboat design, replaced instead with something that more closely resembles a modern coastal cruise ship. The line said it reinforces the growing interest in small ship experiences.
