For us, the combination of plain fun, a really wonderful, engaging staff, the educational excursions, and just seeing a part of the country that was completely new to us, made this a memorable experience. We ended our trip with a New Orleans stay, which really added to all of the above. Since our interest in and knowledge of the Civil War is pretty intense, we would have liked more directly civil war battle talks and excursions, or better information on how to build our own excursions on the fly. The guides at the two Civil War battlefields we visited were beyond excellent. The room was great, quiet, private, with our own lttle balcony. You only pack or unpack at the very beginning of the week or at the very end.

You almost made 5star (and I still think 4 star is a great rating) but in comparison to other river cruises such as Viking or Scenic you’re not quite at that level. However I also need to consider price and I would say that in comparison you do provide great value per dollar.. Only one complaint, having to wait sometimes for quite awhile for food in the dining room. Our guests are encouraged to share their personal story and write a review after their cruise. If this ship was doing back-to-back itineraries, I would have begged and pleaded to stay aboard. We found the cuisine aboard the American Eagle to be very good. American Harmony's uppermost deck features open-air seating and plenty of viewing space for those who want to take in the sights and sounds of the Columbia and Snake rivers. With a clean and uncluttered layout reminiscent of a modern European river cruise ship, plenty of space is offered for guests looking to relax and enjoy a day of scenic cruising. If you want to do Riverboat Cruising right, you have to use American Cruise Lines. We thought this would be a once in a lifetime experience. Always, kind, helpful and some even inspiring (server Genie, on Serenade). Our server, Kristy, always went above and beyond to try and make our dining experience a good one. They always tried to accommodate us but it shouldn't have been that painful.
I can't rave about the food enough, I loved the 1/2 portions, and no wait to be seated. Tours were fantastic, extremely well put todather. Our cabin was spotless everyday, even a turndown. Entertainment was top notch, a lot of thoughtful effort went into planning.

A handful of children might be seen on summer or holiday sailings but, by-and-large, this is a cruise experience geared towards mature adults. The second vessel in American Cruise Line's "modern riverboat" series, American Harmony eschews the Mark Twain-esque aspects that have traditionally characterized Mississippi River cruises. Gone are the paddlewheel propulsion and the traditional Victorian-era riverboat design, replaced instead with something that more closely resembles a modern coastal cruise ship. The line said it reinforces the growing interest in small ship experiences.
